During April Break, nine RSU 57 Transportation Department staff attended the Maine Association of Pupil Transport Conference, including Director of Transportation Richie Newton. Drivers, mechanics, and directors from throughout Maine discussed topics about maintaining a safe and respectful transportation environment for students and drivers; including complacency, health and wellness, and the error chain of effect. A driving skills competition was also held, and we are proud to announce that our very own mechanic Mike Bryant placed third, and will go on to the state championship! Mike has been with RSU 57 for one and a half years and we are so grateful to have him on our team!

It is with great excitement and pride that we announce the recipients of the Model Mustang Staff Award for the month of April! This award is a tribute to those outstanding individuals who embody the qualities of a true “Model Mustang”; they inspire, lead, foster positivity, persevere, and excel in all that they do. Each Model Mustang was nominated by colleagues who took the time to acknowledge and celebrate their coworkers’ exceptional contributions to our district. Their hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for the positive impact they have within RSU 57! This month's winner is Jackie Chaplin from Alfred Elementary!
"Jackie is a leader in our building through and through. She volunteers in a multitude of ways to support a variety of areas in our school. This includes direct instruction, individualized student support, community outreach, school-wide positive behavioral support implementation and "in the moment" help when needed. She always goes the extra mile, especially when she knows it will benefit our school community and is in the best interest of our kids. :) Thank you Jackie for all that you give, please know how appreciated you are!"

Earth Day is an annual event that raises public awareness of the importance of protecting the environment. The Shapleigh Conservation Commission is planning their annual Earth Day roadside cleanup for Saturday, April 27th. Shapleigh learners will have their artwork displayed in the commons area in support of Earth Day. Come check it out and help keep our town, and Earth, clean!
Ted McInerney, from Channel 8 News, hosted Weather at Our School on Thursday, April 11th. We had some early risers join us from 5:45-6:45am to support the morning weather report and then Ted shared a fun weather presentation to our school! On Monday, April 8th, millions of Americans witnessed a total solar eclipse! Did you know there won’t be another one to cross North America from coast to coast until 2045? We did some fun activities to build our knowledge of this upcoming event, watch the total solar eclipse from NASA, as well as view that start of the eclipse right here in Shapleigh! What an amazing learning experience for all.

A presentation will be given about Strategic Plan progress since its adoption 6 months ago, as well as what workforce skills are needed in today's job markets. As part of RSU 57's newly-implemented Strategic Plan, the School Board of Directors Curriculum Committee is seeking to "deepen school and community connections by developing strong community partnerships". We would therefore like to invite local civic and industry leaders to the upcoming RSU 57 Community Forum on Tuesday, April 9 at 7pm at the MHS East Training Center. We will engage in meaningful discussions about preparing students for success post-graduation and review what workforce skills and dispositions are needed in today's job market.

The weather certainly did not cooperate last weekend for the much anticipated and tasty Maple Syrup Weekend and many were not able to go out to enjoy the festivities! Thank you to a special donation from the Knox family of the Irish Maple Sugar House in Shapleigh, all children got a special treat on Monday of vanilla ice cream with topped with real maple syrup. This tasting went along well with our lesson on how to make maple syrup that were completed last week!
