Lyman Elementary is a small school in the small town of Lyman. According to a book produced by Lyman Bicentennial committee in June 1980 entitled 200 years of LYman Southern Maine’s Country Home Town. Lyman was first inhabitated by 36 brave souls in 1767 and was incorporated in 1780. The town of Lyman’s population has now swelled to over 100 times it’s original size school’s population. We have 14 classes of students in grades kindergarten through grades 5. Our typical primary class (k-3) is 14-24 students. Our primary focus (pun intended) is building a solid foundation in literacy and math. In order to help in htis task, we employ a literacy staff that assist our teachers and provides targeted interventions to our students. In our grade 4 and 5 classes, we continue with the focus on literacy and math. We work together to offer necessary interventions and support for our students. Our goal is to have every student leave our halls with a solid foundation in literacy and math. We offer a literacy curriculum based upon Reading First research and mathematics instruction that is part of the Everyday Math series from the Wright Group. We use the Sitton Spelling program to teach commonly used words and patterns in reading and writing. As part of RSU#57 our students transition to Massabesic Middle School, Massabesic High School both in Waterboro, Maine. Dictionary.com defines education as “the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, depending the powers of reasoning and judgement, and generally of perparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life”. While we see our main job is to educate and prepare our students for life outside our walls, we also know that our students are children that need to be nurtured and supported through the process of learning.
